Area 1 (‘Economy’): Improve the productivity, resilience and competitiveness of European Animal Production
We can contribute know-how on genetics and genomics. We work in the area of diversity in breeds and also in health improvement through breeding (robustness, resilience of livestock).
We have an interest to investigate how intensified sectors such as the pig sector in W-Europe could evolve towards alternatives that could provide farmers with acceptable income. How should breeds be changed to adapt to less optimal/ore variable conditions.
We belong to the KU leuven in Belgium within the department of Biosystems. Our group (approx. 10 persons) conducts research in livestock such a pigs, horses, sheep and dogs in the field of genetics and genomics. We belong to a division (30 people) with expertise in poultry (strong physiological research on hatching), precision livestock breeding and host-pathogen interactions.
