Area 2 (‘Environment’): Improve and manage resource use to reduce waste and enhance the environmental sustainability of European animal production
We are interest in develop ideas concerning with nutrient dynamics and nitrate leaching, yield stability, grassland mixtures. Our research staff are working in a number of research areas related to sustainable agriculture. The researches about fertilizing and liming have been carried out in the long-term subsurface drainage field established in 1981. The experimental field was established with four rates of mineral fertilizers and four rates of liming. Each plot was supplied with a seepage tile drain at the depth of 80-100 cm and an inspection well for drain water sampling and measurement of total water amount.
The goal of the Latvia University of Agriculture is to provide the possibility to obtain higher academic and higher professional education in agriculture, veterinary medicine, food technology, engineering, forestry science, social science, information technologies and environment management sectors as well as to develop science and to maintain and develop the Latvian intellectual potential and culture.
Institute of Agronomy performs scientific research work in crop cultivation, perennial grasses breeding, and other fields of organic and conventional farming. The aim of institute is to create new knowledge for sustainable development and competitiveness of Latvian agriculture.
The main action lines of the Institute:
- provides scientific researches, develops recommendations for sustainable, environmentally friendly crop production technologies;
- establishes new perennial grasses varieties, suitable for Latvian environment and producer demands;
- ensures protection of perennial grasses' genetics resources and their sustainable use.
