Shrub-pasture grazing; tannin rich plants; anthelmintic potential; antimethanogenic potential; small ruminants; milk production; milk and cheese quality
Area 2 (‘Environment’): Improve and manage resource use to reduce waste and enhance the environmental sustainability of European animal production
Our main interest is the utilization of Mediterranean shrubs+pasture by grazing ruminants to increase sustainability, profitability and social consensus for animal production system in these areas. We’re interested on the impact of the production system on vegetation biodiversity, animals’ welfare, ecosystem and product quality.
This INIAV research team involves the Animal Production and Health Unit, located in Santarém and the Food Technology and Safety Unit, located in Oeiras (http://www.iniav.pt). Our team is involved in research with dairy small ruminants. The research activities focus on improving the utilization of grazing systems, evaluating the animals’ productivity and product quality, mainly milk and cheese. We are in the process of broadening our scope to evaluate effects on animal’s welfare and ecosystem.
